Mon, 10 November 2008 ![]() This narrative non-fiction book is set in the context of the civil war in Sudan, which ended in 2005. Ayuel and Beny tell their own experiences, fleeing their burned villages and making their exodus along with thousands of other displaced children who had lost their families. They walked for months across barren land, menaced by starvation, disease, wild animals, and shrapnel from helicopter fire. The story follows the evolution of their thinking from revenge to peaceful solutions as they spend fourteen years in refugee camps. The Arab Islamic government of Sudan wished to impose their strict sharia laws on the black Christian and Animist south and claim the newly discovered oil reserves. Comments[1]

Hannah delighted Robin and I with her music, her upbeat interview, and her enthusiasm for her future. Her music is an original and melodious blend of pop and soul bursting from an unassuming girl-next-door meets retro ingenue. Note: I played the incorrect cut off of Hannah's CD and identified it by the wrong name. (Sorry about that!) Comments[2]

Tue, 30 September 2008 ![]() This is a special podcast to wish Leo Armstrong a happy 100th birthday! Our guest on AM Ocala Live in this podcast is Leo's son, Russell Armstrong. WHO IS LEO ARMSTRONG? Born on a Minnesota wheat farm in 1908, Leo Armstrong was only 4 months old when his family moved to Florida. He grew up in Bradenton and dreamed of becoming a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army. However, the military was not recruiting when Leo graduated from high school, so he applied for a college scholarship instead. Needless to say, he won the scholarship and his fate as an educator was sealed. Leo attended the University of Florida and received his teaching certificate in 1933. He taught in Pensacola, Bradenton, and Bunnell before moving to Marion County to teach biology and math at Fellowship School. By taking summer classes Leo earned a Masters degree in school administration from Duke University, and in 1942 he became the principal of Weirsdale High School. In 1955 he was selected as the first principal of the new Lake Weir High School, a position he held for the next 11 years. A devoted family man, Leo was married to his late, beloved wife Nell for 57 years. Together they raised three children, Toliver, Martha, and Russell. Leo attends Weirsdale Presbyterian Church, and he is a charter member of the Kiwanis Club of Lake Weir. In 1985-86 he was honored by the Florida District of Kiwanis as their Kiwanian of the Year. A man of many talents, Leo enjoys gardening, bird watching, and playing the piano. Leo is widely regarded as the best high school principal a student could have. He was a creative disciplinarian and a good friend to those who were fortunate enough to attend his school. Leo always had time for his students, and their welfare was his greatest concern. Former students affectionately remember Leo as the man with a cigar box full of lunch money, a ring with more keys than the janitor's, and a book entitled "One Hundred and One Best Poems." They also remember him as the one who blew up the chemistry lab! But most of all, Leo's students remember him as a man whose heart was big enough for everyone! PRAISE FROM LEO'S STUDENTS & COLLEAGUES
"Leo Armstrong was a giant! All of the children that have turned out so well are a monument to him." George Albright, Jr., Weirsdale High School, Class of 1949 "When I was 16, Leo trusted me more with his car than my own father did!" Bud Boyer, Lake Weir High School, Class of 1958 "Because of Mr. Armstrong, I received a scholarship from the Kiwanis Club of Lake Weir to attend Charity Hospital School of Nursing in New Orleans. The foundation he provided as a principal and a Kiwanian later helped me earn four degrees and led to a long and successful career in nursing management and healthcare administration. " Alice J. Privett, Lake Weir High School, Class of 1963 "I though I had retired from teaching when my husband and I and our two small children moved to Marion County in the summer of 1964. Mon, 1 September 2008 ![]() This is our interview with talk-show host, and legend, Joe Franklin. The Joe Franklin Show ran on Television for 40 consecutive years! He's even in The Guinness Book of World Records! There isn't now and never will be another show quite like it. Its host Joe Franklin was, in many ways, the pioneer of the modern TV Talk Show Format. Joe Franklin is one of Television and Radio's most durable and beloved personalities ever. In addition, he is considered one of the world's leading authorities on "Nostalgia." Through the course of The Joe Franklin Show Joe interviewed an astonishing 300,000+ guests! For a time, Joe employed Bette Midler and her accompanist Barry Manilow as his in-house singer. Woody Allen, Dustin Hoffman, Barbara Streisand, Bill Cosby, and Liza Minnelli are among the world's great talents who got their first exposure on The Joe Franklin Show. There was also a great uniqueness about the program. On any given night you might find a world renown artist sitting next to a balloon folder from New Jersey! Joe's Franklin's lovable and funny persona even prompted comedian Billy Crystal to imitate him on NBC's "Saturday Night Live" for four years. In addition to his TV Talk Show, Joe appeared regularly with Conan O'Brien. He's also seen on "The David Letterman Show," "Live With Regis And Kathy Lee," and has been mentioned several times on the hit cartoon series "The Simpsons." Joe played himself in the films "Manhattan," "Ghostbusters," "Twenty Ninth Street," "Broadway Danny Rose," and has been featured in The New York Times, Newsday, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Post, and The Village Voice. He was recently honored by The Museum Of Television and Radio and can currently be heard Saturday nights broadcasting on WOR's "Memory Lane" (710AM in NYC, 12 midnight). Joe can also be heard daily on Bloomberg Radio's "Lifestyles" segment. Comments[1]
